WHAT’S NEW IN PHILADELPHIA AND THE COUNTRYSIDE®?
Fall 2007 And Beyond

Fall 2007:
Wearable Art Finds A New Home At The Philadelphia Museum Of Art
Fashionistas and scholars of fashion history are rejoicing at the September opening of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Ruth and Raymond G. Perelman Building as it marks a grand new era for the museum’s vast costume and textile collection, as well as modern and contemporary design and photographs. The museum’s first major expansion boasts a nearly 2,000-square-foot gallery, a glass-walled study gallery and increased study, storage and conservation areas that provide unprecedented access to the costume and textile collection, which numbers some 30,000 objects. The opening exhibition is A Passion for Perfection, highlighting three Philadelphia-born designers who have achieved international renown: James Galanos, Gustave Tassell and Ralph Rucci. www.philamuseum.org

Ready, Set, Renoir
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is the only U.S. venue to host Renoir Landscapes, an exhibition featuring works by the Impressionist great, on view through January 6, 2008. Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s innovative approach to painting the outdoors placed him among the most audacious and original artists of the mid-19th century; this exhibition is the first to exclusively explore these visual territories during the first 30 years of his career. www.philamuseum.org

Curtain Rises On The Suzanne Roberts Theatre
Honoring the wife of the founder of Philadelphia-based communications giant Comcast, The Suzanne Roberts Theatre officially opened on the Avenue of the Arts on October 21, 2007. The theater houses the Philadelphia Theatre Company, a professional company dedicated to presenting Philadelphia works and world premiers by contemporary American playwrights. The 365-seat theater will envelop both actor and audience, while the lobby will provide commanding views of the city. www.phillytheatreco.com

Longwood’s Long Anticipated Indoor Children’s Garden
Just 30 miles from Philadelphia, Longwood Gardens debuted its dynamic new indoor children’s garden on October 27, 2007. Five years in the making, the new garden is a horticultural wonderland with spectacular water features where young visitors will encounter an imaginative group of one-of-a-kind, handcrafted garden elements. Three times larger than Longwood’s previous children’s garden, this one is divided into five themed sections containing pools, caves, waterfalls, an animated water “glow worm,” a bamboo maze, sculptures and a lookout tower. www.longwoodgardens.org

Winter 2007:

2008:
99 Bottles of Beer In Philly

Beer lovers will flock to Philadelphia from March 7-16, 2008 for the city’s first Beer Week, hosted by Don Russell, also known as “Joe Sixpack,” the award-winning local journalist specializing in all things malted. While details of the schedule are still being worked out, Russell promises the luscious lineup of events will include a tutored tasting at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, a cask ale festival, the Brewer’s Plate dinner and a tribute dinner in honor of Michael Jackson, a noted beer writer who is recently deceased. There will also be nightly beer dinners, tastings and meet-the-brewer events at area restaurants. www.joesixpack.net

Please Touch Museum Relocates To Fairmount Park
In the fall of 2008, taking kids to the Please Touch Museum will be a completely reinvented experience, when the museum opens its doors to its new home in Fairmount Park. The children’s museum’s location in Memorial Hall—a National Historic Landmark built in 1876 for the Centennial Exhibition—will boast three times more space for exhibitions and programs. Just outside the museum, kids and adults will also delight in riding the meticulously restored 1924 Dentzel Carousel, built in Philadelphia for a now-defunct amusement park 10 blocks from Memorial Hall. www.pleasetouchmuseum.org

President’s House Commemorative Site
Slated to debut in 2008, within close view of Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell Center, the President’s House Commemorative Site will mark the location of the nation’s former Executive Mansion and honor the people who lived and worked there, among them at least nine enslaved people of African descent held by President George Washington from 1790 to 1797. Officials are now rethinking the original plans for the project thanks to an excavation this summer that unearthed the foundation walls, a tunnel (used by the enslaved to get into the main part of the house) and the foundation for a bowed window (from Washington’s office).
