Philadelphia International Airport Press Release
Log On Before Taking Off At Philadelphia International Airport Free Wireless Internet Access Arrives In Time For Holiday Travel Starting December 15, 2007, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) will offer free, wireless Internet access every day to college students and to all travelers on Saturdays and Sundays. Students merely present their college ID cards at any Airport information counter in order to receive a coupon with an authorization code. This code then allows them to access the Internet for up to 24 hours from their laptop computers. On Saturdays and Sundays, all Airport visitors will be able to log on without the need for an authorization code. Prior to this program, the normal cost for wireless Internet access at PHL ranged from $7.95 for a 24-hour connection to $39.95 for a monthly, unlimited option. In order to connect, computers must have either built-in Wi-Fi technology or an 802.11b network interface card. After opening their computer’s web browser, passengers will be redirected to the PHL Wi-Fi Splash screen and given further instructions on how to gain access. In announcing the program, which is being offered in partnership with AT&T, Philadelphia’s Commerce Director Stephanie Naidoff noted its benefits. “Our airport is recognized for its many customer-friendly amenities and now we are adding one more customer perk that will be of tremendous value to so many travelers,” said Naidoff. “What’s more, this program will help mark Philadelphia as a cutting-edge place to be and will secure our reputation for having an atmosphere of innovation.” Aviation Director Charles Isdell concurred and also emphasized the benefits to passenger comfort and convenience. “Free, wireless Internet access will make time spent at PHL more enjoyable and productive,” he noted. Philadelphia International Airport is owned and operated by the City of Philadelphia. The Airport is a self-sustaining entity that operates without the use of local tax dollars. It is one of the largest economic engines in Pennsylvania, generating an estimated $14 billion in spending to the regional economy and employing a workforce of nearly 34,000.
