GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING, HEAD OUT ON THE PENNSYLVANIA HIGHWAY
Canadians Invited To Spend A Week Or Two In Philadelphia And Pennsylvania This Summer

PHILADELPHIA, May 5, 2008 - After a long winter, the Conference Board of Canada’s Summer Travel Intentions survey is predicting a 6.5% increase in the number of Canadians planning a U.S. summer leisure trip this year versus 2007. And despite recent gas price increases, filling up the tank in the U.S. is still less expensive than in Canada. The strong Canadian dollar, no sales tax on clothing and the Philly Overnight® Hotel Package make a trip through Pennsylvania en route to Philadelphia an affordable way to spend a week or two this summer. Add to that the city’s proximity to the Jersey Shore, casinos and family-friendly attractions such as Sesame Place and a Philadelphia vacation becomes even more appealing. To make trip planning easier, the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) and the Pennsylvania Tourism Office are offering an array of one- to seven-day itineraries visitors can mix and match to create an ideal driving holiday that appeals to their interests.

GPTMC’s Web site, gophila.com, offers dozens of complete one- to three-day itineraries, including Family Fun in Philadelphia and The Countryside®, Philly Like a Local, Walking in Benjamin Franklin’s Footsteps, Galleries and Gardens, Rocky’s Legendary Philly Weekend, Tracing the Underground Railroad and Vintage Shopping. Some famous Philadelphia personalities, such as Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb and In Her Shoes author Jennifer Weiner, have also contributed their favourites to itineraries.

Just an hour or two outside the city, Philadelphia’s countryside offers untamed landscapes that have inspired countless artists, up and coming wine regions, working farms and picturesque small towns complete with covered bridges. The Water, Lakes and Rivers three-day itinerary begins on Philly’s own waterfront, continues along the Delaware River to the historic town of New Hope and ends with a sail along the Brandywine River. During the three-day Historic Fun itinerary, history buffs can explore Valley Forge Historical National Park and take in a Revolutionary War re-enactment at the Brandywine Battlefield.

The Pennsylvania Tourism Office’s Web site, visitPA.com, features eight, week-long road trip itineraries such as the 200-kilometer Elk Scenic Drive through the Pennsylvania Wilds, an area of the state renowned for its natural beauty and fall foliage. Dutch Country Roads, on the other hand, takes visitors through historic Gettysburg, classic Amish country and Hershey, the world’s sweetest town.

For those intrepid travelers who prefer the back roads and the rare treasures found alongside them, check out the Shunpikers Guide (as in shunning the turnpike or highway) at visitPA.com/shunpiker.
