Here are a dozen of the region’s many acknowledgements in 2007:
  • Today declared the Cheesesteak BLT at Vesuvio the “Best Sandwich in America.” In September, the Philadelphia classic-with-a-twist beat out a muffuletta in New Orleans, a pastrami sandwich in New York, a lobster roll in California and a triple-decker sandwich in Chicago.
  • Esquire’s October issue listed Rae in its “Best New Restaurants 2007,” a list in which the restaurant shared international company.
  • Rolling Stone magazine recognized Philadelphia’s “Hot Music Scene” in its October issue, calling it one that’s “united by its eclecticism and disregard of outside trends.”
  • Travel + Leisure listed the Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia and The Rittenhouse Hotel in their “Top 100 Hotels for the Continental U.S. and Canada.” The ranking appeared in the magazine’s 12th annual “World’s Best Awards” issue in August 2007.
  • A Travel + Leisure/CNN Headline News poll ranked 25 cities on different characteristics. Philadelphia placed second on the historical sites/monuments list; third on the sports fan’s vacations and farmers’ markets lists; fourth on the culture overall, museums/galleries and antiques lists; and fifth on the food and dining list. (October)
  • Cooking Light, the nation’s largest food magazine, placed Philadelphia ninth on its “Best Cities” list because it ranked highly in the following categories: number of highly rated restaurants; farmers’ markets; city residents consuming five or more fruits and vegetables per day; the good health of locals; and its prime walkability. (April)
  • Out magazine included Woody’s Bar in its September list of “The 50 Greatest Gay Bars in the World.”
  • PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) named Citizens Bank Park, home of the Phillies, the “Most Vegetarian-Friendly Ballpark” in North America, in August.
  • Forbes.com named Chestnut Hill one of the “Top Urban Enclaves.” The August article notes the area’s “cobblestone streets, stately homes and upscale shops and galleries.”
  • Outsidein.com determined that Philadelphia is the second bloggiest city in the U.S., as reported by USA Today in April.
  • fDi magazine, a subsidiary of the Financial Times of London, ranked Philadelphia number eight in its April “Top 10 Large Cities of the Future” list. Philadelphia also ranked number one in its division for human resources and for best infrastructure and in the top five for best quality of life.
  • Places Rated Almanac ranked Philadelphia number five in its nationwide “Top Ten Livable Cities” in April.
