Washington Square / Mother Bethel AME Church
6th Street and Walnut Street Philadelphia, PA 19106
When the Yellow Fever epidemic struck, “bleeding” was the latest in medical treatments. Needless to say, it didn’t work and while the new nation’s leaders high-tailed it out of the infested city, the African American community risked their own lives to care for the sick and dying.
Meanwhile, you can walk on hallowed ground when you visit Mother Bethel AME Church, the mother church of the nation's first black denomination. Founded in 1797, the church rests upon the oldest parcel of land continuously owned by African-Americans.
