The People's Light and Theatre Company Details
The Experience
Located in an idyllic suburban setting, People’s Light & Theatre Company boasts two “black box” theaters, one large and one small, as well as a lovely restaurant in a old farmhouse. The lobby for the larger theater is an attractively remodeled stone barn.
People’s Light produces contemporary and classic plays, ranging from “think” pieces such as Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice to A Flea in Her Ear, a classic French farce of “no redeeming social value.” It also makes a specialty of new plays, having produced more than 60 world premieres, including Louis Lippa’s adaptation of Sister Carrie and Sacco and Vanzetti: a Vaudeville. It sponsors a family-oriented series as part of its main season.
History
The People’s Light dates to 1974 when several young theatre artists set out to form a resident company based on the communal ideas of the time. They have built a theatrical tradition and have a vital relationship to their community. To this day, People’s Light honors the idea of a resident ensemble and members of the company are in multiple productions each year. Its Project Discovery student-oriented program annually reaches 40,000 children.
