City Showcases Its Beer Roots Throughout The Month With Festivals, Podcasts, Book Launches, Tours And More

PHILADELPHIA, February 15, 2008 - This year, Philadelphia, a city that’s been brewing beer for more than 300 years, is showing that it’s one of America’s best beer drinking cities with the debut of several new brew-inspired tours, guides, classes and festivals, including Philly Beer Week, taking place March 7-16, 2008. The suds fest will draw beer experts and lovers from across the region and around the world to lead and participate in dinners, tastings, tours, meet-and-greets, Brewer’s Plate food-and-beer pairings, home-brewing technique demos, a cask ale festival and much more. • On March 7, Don Russell, the Philadelphia Daily News beer reporter also known as Joe Sixpack, will simultaneously launch Philly Beer Week and release his new book, Joe Sixpack’s Philly Beer Guide, an insider’s guide that’s foaming with lists of the region’s best beer-serving establishments, walking tours with maps, barroom secrets and a calendar of global beer festivals. To celebrate, Russell will host an evening of suds sampling from more than 20 local breweries and brewpubs, paired with dishes from marketplace vendors. • While Philly Beer Week officially revs up on March 7, the Philly Craft Beer Festival, taking place one week earlier, primes the palate. The brew fest at The Navy Yard Cruise Terminal on March 1, presents 50 breweries and more than 120 beers to die-hard beer connoisseurs. A daytime and nighttime session provide four hours each of live music, demonstrations, food and, of course, tastings of local favorites such as Yards and Victory and national craft beers like He’brew and Rogue, with proceeds benefiting charity. 5100 S. • Still don’t believe how committed the region is to its malt, barley and yeast? In early March, skeptics can log onto www.gophila.com/beer to hear the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation’s (GPTMC) four beer vodcasts. Each video will zero in on one distinct neighborhood to bring Web visitors inside more than a dozen beer sites in the city. At each gastropub, restaurant, sports bar, neighborhood tavern or specialty beer shop, on-camera host Don Russell pops up to interview some of the people who make Philly’s beer scene happen. • For even more advice on great beer joints, the GPTMC Web site also offers a self-guided beer tour that describes more than a dozen of the most popular beer bars in the city. • Once Upon A Nation kicks off its Tippler’s Tour for the fourth season on April 17. That means every Thursday through October 30, locals, tourists, history lovers and beer buffs can amble around Old City in Historic Philadelphia with a Colonial guide in search of the area’s finest watering holes. At each of the four stops—Society Hill Hotel Restaurant, Triumph Brewing Company, Old Original Bookbinder’s and City Tavern—the tour guide entertains guests with songs and stories of drinking traditions from Colonial times, while guests enjoy a beer or libation. • What could be better than school for beer? The wildly popular Tria Fermentation School’s original mission was to teach the staff at Tria café about the three great fermented foods on their menu: beer, wine and cheese. But the public demanded to be let in.
