Softball And Soccer And A Rodeo, Oh My!

PHILADELPHIA, February 27, 2008 - In spring 2008, Philadelphia is hosting a series of first-time events for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) sports fans. From May 9-11, the Liberty Gay Rodeo Association (LGRA) will stage Philadelphia’s inaugural gay rodeo, the Liberty Stampede, at the 100-year-old Devon Horse Show Fairgrounds in the Philadelphia suburbs. Then, later in the month, the Philadelphia Falcons Soccer Club will join forces with the City of Brotherly Love Softball League to present the Liberty Bell Classic, the city’s first LGBT multi-sporting event. Both events are open to the public.

Approximately 100 cowboys and cowgirls from Canada and the United States are expected to compete in the Liberty Stampede at the Devon Horse Show Fairgrounds, home to three days of competition, including bull riding, barrel racing and steer wrestling. On May 11, the final day of action, those attending the event with their mother can take advantage of specially discounted Mother’s Day tickets. In the evenings, the Loews Philadelphia Hotel and restaurant and bars in the surrounding “Gayborhood” will host action-packed events filled with lasso-swinging ladies and bronco-riding cowboys. www.libertygra.org

On Memorial Day Weekend, May 23-25, sports fans can enjoy high-level softball and soccer action at various parks within Fairmount Park and at the Metropolitan Field in West Deptford, New Jersey. Approximately 50 teams from across North America will participate in the competitions. Each day, the festivities will end in the “Gayborhood,” where a series of nightly events will take place, including the Saturday evening Camac Street Party hosted by Southwest Airlines, the official airline sponsor of the Philadelphia – Get Your History Straight And Your Nightlife Gay® campaign. www.libertybellclassic.org
