Insider Tip
The bar at Striped Bass is a popular spot for a few drinks and people watching. If you visit for happy hour on Friday (5-7 p.m.), you’ll get to enjoy a complimentary raw bar as well.
Fun Fact
Striped Bass had a starring role in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense — it was the restaurant at which Bruce Willis’s character was late for his anniversary dinner with his wife.
Striped Bass is elegance incarnate — 28-foot high ceilings, marble columns, crystal chandeliers, velvet upholstery and lots of dark mahogany wood create an ambiance of sophistication and grandeur from the moment you enter. The large, multi-level dining room belies its position as a perfect space for an intimate dinner.
Since reopening in 2004 under the new ownership of Stephen Starr and direction of chefs Alfred Portale and Christopher Lee (winner of 2005 James Beard Rising Star Chef of the Year), Striped Bass has been as popular as ever. As you would surmise from a name like Striped Bass, the kitchen specializes in fine seafood. There are, however, options for meat-eaters. Asian influences can be spotted throughout the menu.
Recommended starters include the wild striped bass ceviche, yellowfin tuna tartare, shrimp bisque and seared marlin sashimi. Popular main courses include the miso-marinated black cod, grilled Hawaiian escolar, Colorado braised lamb and, of course, the restaurant’s namesake striped bass.
Striped Bass, which does not serve lunch, now serves brunch on Sundays. It’s an absolutely delightful way to conclude a wonderful weekend in Philadelphia.
