Insider Tip
For Hotel Pool, Headlong’s new project, the dancers will get wet for their art, performing in the swimming pools of hotels around the country.
The Experience
Warning: This is not your mother’s modern dance company. From car alarms to Sputnik, from James Joyce’s Ulysses to Star Wars — Headlong makes dance works with an irreverent spin on subjects nobody else thought to take on. Headlong doesn’t just tackle such burning pop-culture questions as, “What makes Britney Spears so popular?” It also happily pulls apart its own work, with asides and live elements revealing the thoughts behind a leap or a turn.
A Headlong dance can be at once funny, poignant and wickedly insightful about the world we live in. Headlong has begun receiving national attention and awards, including New York’s Bessie for dance and performance.
History
Started in 1993 by three friends from Wesleyan University, it has now expanded to a core of five dancers. With no one artistic director, Headlong benefits from revolving choreographers, which may help explain the freewheeling energy and range of this leading-edge group.
