The Experience
The "Little Dictator" has invaded Philadelphia!
From May 29 through September 7, 2009, the National Constitution Center will host Napoléon, an exhibition exploring the private life of the Emperor of France and his ties to the growth of the United States.
Napoléon features more than 300 objects from the First Empire of Napoléon Bonaparte, including original framed paintings, sculptures, personal effects, prints and documents, as well as furniture from the Imperial palaces.
A few notable artifacts include: one of Napoléon’s signature hats worn during the battle at Essling in 1809; Napoléon’s camp bed from the Battle of Wagram; and the sword that proclaimed Napoléon Emperor in the Coronation Ceremony at Notre Dame.
Each of the exhibition's galleries also showcases connections between Napoléon and the United States, a nation he greatly aided in its infancy. After all, the Emperor signed the Louisiana Purchase — which doubled the size of the country.
The exhibition’s tour marks the first time the Chalençon Collection has been seen in North America and the first time a number of items on display have ever been seen by the general public.
