General Description
This Fourth of July, Philadelphia is celebrating the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln — the beloved president who championed liberty, justice and equal rights — with the four-day Lincoln 200 festival, taking place July 2 through July 5 on Independence Mall.
The fun, free and educational schedule of events is suitable for the entire family, perfect to tie in with your visit to the 10-day Sunoco Welcome America! festival.
The large-scale festival will focus on the following themes through special pavilions, presentations and artifacts:
- Lincoln: The Definitive Years (1860-1865)
- Lincoln's Eye on Science
- Abe in the Arts
- Green Linc (eco-friendly efforts during and since the days of Lincoln)
- Lincoln for Kids
The festival will also feature live music and other performances, "living history" reenactments and a marketplace selling various crafts. Please visit the Lincoln 200 official Web site to learn more.
Lincoln in Philadelphia
The festival will reveal Lincoln’s close ties to Philadelphia — including his 1861 inaugural whistle stop tour to Washington DC, recently evoked by President Obama’s own train trip to the capitol.
Visitors will learn about Philadelphia’s pivotal role in helping preserve the Union in the Civil War, the city’s rich contributions to the Underground Railroad and the continuing struggle for civil rights.
