Outsider Tip
If you take the Schuyllkill River Trail, you might want to stop for lunch in the trendy, riverfront neighborhood of Manayunk or continue all the way up the relatively flat trail to Valley Forge National Historical Park for a roughly 45-mile round trip.
You can rent mountain bikes, hybrid bikes or road bikes at Bike Line, conveniently located in Philadelphia’s Convention Center district. Rentals are by the day, the weekend or the week. If you prefer your own pedals, shop staff will be happy to swap them for you.
The shop itself is in a highly trafficked downtown area, but it’s a short one-mile ride to the popular Schuylkill River Trail. From there you can take a scenic ride through some of the most beautiful parts of Fairmount Park.
For those who are comfortable with urban cycling, Philadelphia has more than 220 miles of clearly marked bicycle lanes.
COME PREPARED
You'll need a driver's license and a major credit card. Helmets and locks are required and are included in the price. You can usually find a copy of the regional bicycle map at the store.
