Philadelphia’s main attraction on New Year’s Eve draws thousands of people to the Delaware River Waterfront each year. Conveniently located within a short walk of Old City, Society Hill and South Street, Penn’s Landing becomes a festive party with revelers of all ages delighting in a breathtaking fireworks display.

A good plan of action would be to go out to dinner with your party of family and friends and try to finish around 11 p.m. Then, if you’re not already in the neighborhood, take a cab or SEPTA’s Blue Line to Old City, at which point you’ll have just a five minute walk to Penn’s Landing.

You should arrive with just enough time before the show to secure a great fireworks-watching location. Timing is also important because if it’s especially cold outside (as December in Philadelphia is known to be), you don’t want to arrive too early.

The show, which approaches 20 minutes in length, has a beautiful backdrop — an illuminated Benjamin Franklin Bridge and, if viewed from Camden, the Philadelphia Skyline.

After the show, make your way back to Old City, where you can choose from countless places to continue the celebration.

Watching the fireworks

As the clock approaches midnight, there are a few places besides the Delaware River Waterfront where you can go to watch the fireworks.

You can get a great view from Old City, where restaurant and bar patrons file out to the streets to watch the show.

You could also celebrate the New Year aboard the Battleship New Jersey on the Camden Waterfront, where you can watch from the ship’s main deck as the fireworks go off over the Delaware River.

And if you’re in the mood for ice skating, visit the Blue Cross RiverRink on Penn’s Landing for a New Year’s party on ice while the fireworks light the night.
