Wife. Mother. Widow. Nun. After her husband’s murder, the 14th century Italian widow pleaded for peace, averting a village war. When her two sons later died, she entered a local convent, devoting her life to prayer and charitable works. The shrine, which once served as a focal point for Italian immigrants, is a magnificent memorial. Built in the style of a 14th century Renaissance church, the shrine incorporates frescos, marble and stained glass in its homage to St. Rita.
