Many of the larger homes built in Philadelphia proper in the 17th and 18th centuries, like the
Powell House
, were mansions of their day and had lawns surrounding them. Today those lawns, if existing, are pocket gardens, but nevertheless a welcome respite in the midst of a major metropolis.
Meanwhile, in the countryside, homes were usually built as part of large country estates, many of which have since grown to become manicured gardens (

) or public parks (

).
