Houses with Gardens

Many of the larger homes built in Philadelphia proper in the 17th and 18th centuries, like the Powell House, were mansions of their day and had lawns surrounding them. Today those lawns, if existing, are pocket gardens, but nevertheless a welcome respite in the midst of a major metropolis.

Meanwhile, in the countryside, homes were usually built as part of large country estates, many of which have since grown to become manicured gardens (Highlands) or public parks (Graeme).
