Eclectic art exhibits, with a campus-wide sculpture collection
The Experience
The stone exterior of the Berman Museum exudes tradition, though the museum was born recently, in 1989. While the museum’s own collections are strong in several areas, including American painting, Japanese prints and Pennsylvania German artifacts, you will find works from a range of sources in its exhibition galleries.
Subjects have ranged from lathe-turned wood works to ancient artifacts from Israel, and have focused on artists such as Francoise Gilot and Pennsylvania artists, including Quita Brodhead and James Fuhrman. The Museum’s collection of over 40 outdoor sculptures gives special character to the surrounding campus. Be sure to walk around to discover work by English artist Lynn Chadwick, Mary Ann Unger, Buki Schwartz and others.
History
Noted collectors Philip and Muriel Berman helped to found the Museum, donating works from their collection to art and artifacts already owned by Ursinus College. Two modern galleries, housed in what was originally the college library, host the rotating exhibits.
