Insider Tip
The Plough’s location in Old City is convenient to several of Philadelphia’s famous historic attractions on Independence Mall — just a few blocks to the west. So if you’re looking for a good place for lunch after visiting the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the National Constitution Center, et al., try a table below the large front windows of this former Corn Exchange Building.
The Plough and the Stars is one of the most authentic bars in Old City and, as a result, has become incredibly popular in a neighborhood that has no shortage of options for where to eat and drink.
The Plough cannot actually be exclusively classified as a bar; equal billing should be given to its restaurant, for it does a serious lunch and dinner business during the week and has a great Irish brunch on the weekends.
For lunch, you can’t go wrong with traditional favorites like the fish and chips and shepherd’s pie. Although, the more modern salads, which vary by season, are also spot on. If you come for dinner, some of the same items overlap menus, while other popular dishes include the black angus burger, plump mussels steamed in sherry and herbs, duck paté and daily seafood special that are routinely superb.
After dinner, the Plough transforms into one of Old City's busiest nightspots, with young twenty- and thirty-somethings dancing and drinking the night away.
So no matter if you go for the Guinness, the food or the scene, you're sure to have a great time.
