For nearly 150 years, McGillin’s Old Ale House has been serving up cold beer, solid bar food and friendly service to its loyal patrons, who come in all types. While young 20-somethings fill the place for karaoke on Friday nights, happy hours at McGgillin’s are typically filled with a very diverse crowd. Locals and visitors, business people and hipsters all seem to agree that McGillin’s is a fine place for a pint and some good conversation.
Located on a tiny alley around the corner from City Hall, McGillin’s should be on your list if you’re looking for an authentic Philadelphia spot for a relaxed dinner or friendly drinks. The bar stocks a great selection of local beers like Yeungling, Yards and Victory while the televisions are always tuned to the most important local sporting event.
McGillin’s décor is truly one-of-a-kind — the brick walls are adorned with various items from the bar’s history, including a sign from the old Wanamaker’s department store, liqueur licenses and old photographs.
And if you can get a seat, McGillin’s is a great place to watch the big game while you’re in town. The space isn’t as big as the chain sports bars, but that is what makes it so great. You can watch the Eagles, Phillies or Sixers in an historic Philadelphia bar packed full of life-long fans that want a win more than anything.
It all combines for a great time — that is, as long as the Philly team emerges victorious in the end.
