Outsider Tip

Hiking abandoned railroads is an interesting look at history and the way nature returns to reclaim the land. In spring, the contrast between rail cinder dirt and the new foliage of the leaves is beautiful. Most railroads have a soft cinder base, which makes for soft walking, not to mention flat, which is easy for anyone!

Support the Trails
Volunteers are needed to help maintain trails and support the conservation action network, a group that seeks to promote land conservation. Members get special discounts on great programs, and a subscription to the award-winning AMC Outdoors magazine. Visit www.amcdv.org or call (617) 523-0636 for more information.

Join a group hike into the Pennsylvania Highlands, where you’ll find some friendly faces, as well as the vast forests of the Big Woods. But hiking and backpacking aren’t the only ways this established outdoor club enjoys the outdoors.

You can bring your bicycle for a ride along the river, stopping in one of the series of historic towns for lunch, or take a paddle out onto the water for an overnight canoe camping trip.

The Appalachian Mountain Club organizes hiking, biking and paddling trips in the warmer months as well as winter sports like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
