The Experience

The Borowsky Gallery continues the Gershman Y’s long tradition of supporting arts and culture, with shows that often showcase fine, often up-and-coming regional artists through the lens of intriguing themes. Artists such as Warren Angle, Candy DePew, Alida Fish, Alan Greenberg and Virgil Marti have been part of exhibits exploring the Holocaust, classical motifs in contemporary art, “decorative” art and even food.

A recent show featured comic artist Art Spiegelman, author of Maus and New Yorker contributor, in the large, one-room gallery. In the Gershman Y’s lobby, the Open Lens Gallery offers regular photography exhibits, separate from the Borowsky Gallery’s shows.

History

The Gershman Y has provided cultural programming since beginning at its current location in the 1920's. But from the late fifties into the seventies, the Y was a hothouse for new art trends, offering Philadelphians their first look at art Happenings, installations, Pop art and more. In 2003 the Borowsky Gallery mounts an ambitious exhibit on its own history, giving audiences a taste of those innovative years.
