Insider Tip
The dining room opens into a great cobblestone patio for warm-weather, alfresco dining.
The historic General Lafayette Inn and Brewery will take you back to the days of the American Revolution. Built in the 1732 and frequented by a certain young French general during the Revolutionary War, this authentic Colonial tavern has since operated almost continuously as a hotel and restaurant and is now in its fourth century.
Ties to history are deep here — General Lafayette and his men successfully fought the Battle of Barren Hill nearby and the Inn was even used as headquarters by General William Smallwood and General William Hull during an encampment in 1778.
The Inn features both a bar area and more formal dining room, along with wood burning fireplaces, rustic wooden beams and excellent food. The menu features a blend of American comfort food and colonially-inspired pub fare. A few stand outs include Lager-steamed Mussels with chorizo and garlic, ale-marinated grilled pork chop and the charcuterie and cheese plate, which can be wisely paired with the beer sampler — six three oz. drafts for $5.50.
The brewery (which was added in 1996) and restaurant prides itself on using fresh, local ingredients from regional farms. Brewmaster Christopher Leonard creates outstanding, international-style brews such as Raspberry Mead-Ale and Pacific Pale Ale. Best of all — a 20 oz. "pint" will only cost you $5.
The Inn
In case you decide to extend your stay, it’s nice to know that the Inn’s owner also runs a bed & breakfast, “Lafayette’s Retreat,” located a few steps from the restaurant, connected by a brick pathway and secluded among tall oak trees.
