Insider Tip
Get loose at the Group Motion Friday Night Workshop, a group-improv movement experience open to all, every weekend at the CEC.
The Experience
Group Motion is the source for multimedia dance theater created around big themes, from the mysteries of the body to the suffering of war. It’s known for a distinctive mix of fluid dancing, generated through group improvisations, with video and often original music. This company really is the source.
On the Philly dance scene for over 30 years, it’s been a training ground for many of the city’s best dancers and choreographers; its current roster of young movers lights up the stage. Group Motion also regularly collaborates with provocative choreographers/performers from other countries, like Japan’s Masaki Iwana and England’s Carol Brown.
History
Group Motion was originally founded in 1962 in Berlin, evolving from the Mary Wigman School of Dance, under the direction Brigitta Herrmann, Helmut Gottschild and Manfred Fischbeck.
A longtime anchor of the grass-roots South Street arts scene, Group Motion recently moved its home to West Philadelphia’s Community Education Center as part of Kumquat, a dance-company collective that also includes Rennie Harris Puremovement, Genghis and the Bald Mermaids.
